R.A. Salvatore is one of my favorite authors. I started reading his books in 2000, with “The Crystal Shard” and couldn’t stop. I made my way through the “Dark Elf Trilogy” in no time. Since then I have grown to love all types of genres and in fact started to think about becoming a writer myself due to stories like that of Salvatore and Robert Jordan. Today I would like to write a short critique of R.A. Salvatore’s Facebook page.
There are three choices a writer can make when putting together a Facebook account. They could choose a rigid account that is called a “page” in which they can promote their writing or service. They could start a “group” to allow them and others to follow a cause, sport, activity, etc… Then there is the “profile,” this is what R.A. Salvatore chose to do. Just like his writing style his “profile” is easy-going and genuine.
Mr. Salvatore is openly social with people who comment on his page and seems to enjoy sharing his activities and thoughts regularly. His diverse commentary spans from Boston Marathon Victim support to the naming of his local softball team. I like the name chosen, “Clan Battleaxe,” which shows he is natural and humorous in a forum where he could have chosen to be overly professional.
In short Salvatore’s page is fun to follow and as mentioned before authentic with no overbearing nudge toward sales, though he is wise enough to mention the goings-on of his professional life with the occasional link or insight to his thought process. He is also kind enough to forewarn folks not to spoil the plots or endings of his books. His casual approach is what his fans would expect, which is why they come back time and again because they are a real part of his circle of friends. I believe a better use of Facebook could not be accomplished; he has mingled the professional with the personal flawlessly.
